HouseSmarts DIY “Power washing your siding” Episode 109

A power washer can make quick work of cleaning the exterior of your house. It is pretty easy to do with some basic knowledge. Here are some simple steps

DIY: Engine Bay Washing

Video tutorial on how to wash dirt, grease, or grim away from your engine bay. Make sure your engine is cool when you do this procedure. Spray the solution onto the engine and around the engine bay, let it soak for approximately 5 minutes, then continue to rinse off with hose or pressure washer. Let engine dry for a few hours to prevent the vehicle from running rough. This particular video was done on a 2000 Subaru Outback 4 cylinder wagon.

The soap I used in this video is called Spray Nine, but I’m sure there is other cleaners available which will do the same job.

Areas to take caution around when washing:
-alternator
-coils/distributor
-spark plugs
-spark plug wires
-fuse panel
-oil filling places (engine oil, transmission oil, power steering)
-brake fluid reservoir
-intake
-air filter

To protect any areas you are worried about water entering, you can cover it up with a plastic bag.

Procedure:
-making sure your engine is cool, open the hood and spray the engine down with the Spray Nine cleaner
-let it soak for 3-5 minutes
-using a pressure washer, wash the soap, dirt, grease, grim off the engine being careful about the areas I cautioned about above
-if there is still some dirt remaining, you can respray the area with soap and pressure wash it again
-harder areas you can scrub down with a brush
-leaving the hood open, let the engine bay air dry
-using compressed air or a wet/dry shop-vac, you can speed up the drying process
